Frozen Trojans keep on winning
The Parkland hockey team continued their hot streak in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League with a 5-1 win last Monday night over Salisbury/Whitehall at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.
The Trojans remained undefeated at 12-0-1, and honored eight seniors before the game.
One of those seniors, Nicholas Chandik, opened the scoring in the first period on a breakaway just 31 seconds after the opening whistle.
"The defenseman bobbled the puck and I just poked it out from under him," Chandik said. "I knew they had a good goalie, so I had to make a move on him. I just made a quick move, tried to make it simple, and it ended up in the back of the net."
Parkland could have had plenty more goals in the first period with their advantage in scoring opportunities, but Salisbury/Whitehall goalkeeper Tristan Collins (41 saves) stood firm between the pipes. The Trojans outshot Salisbury/Whitehall 46-16, but 19-6 in the first period.
It wasn't until the second period that Parkland could finally have some breathing room.
Chandik was involved again, when he looked up ice and found Evan Dratch open. Dratch found the puck on his stick right in front of net, as he and Brett McHale were both in the same spot to hit it in, but Dratch got to it first and was credited with the goal.
Just before that goal, Zachary Zager nearly added a shorthanded goal on a breakaway, but was stopped by Collins.
Morgan Bensinger added a second goal in the period on a wrister past the stick side of Collins.
"We know it's going to get harder at the end of the season here to keep it going," said Chandik. "We're always looking at the playoffs even though we try not to. You have to look at it game by game. We just took care of business tonight. It was a total team effort."
A fellow senior, Matthew Doe tallied a goal in the final period, and Brett McHale finished off the scoring for the Trojans six minutes later when he followed up a shot by Dratch to put back the rebound.
Robert Stock made 12 saves in two periods of play, and Jordan Lorah stopped three shots in the final period.
Gavin Carey prevented a Parkland shutout, scoring with just 1:36 remaining.
The Trojans have two games remaining in the regular season before a three-game playoff series with Emmaus for the Pure Division championship.
"We definitely want to win the championship," said Chandik. "It would be nice to beat Emmaus."
