Coplay Fire Department recorded 10 incidents for the month of January.

· Jan. 3 at 9:06 p.m. a call was received for a smoke detector sounding in a vacant apartment at 136 S. Front St.

· Jan. 3 at 9:23 p.m. an EMS lift assist was requested at 11 N. Front St.

· Jan. 11 at 7:32 p.m. an EMS assist was requested to gain entry to a residence at 853 Catherine Drive.

· Jan. 16 at 2:48 p.m. a call was received for an odor of smoke investigation inside Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit located at 52 N. Second St.

· Jan. 17 at 7:28 a.m. traffic control was requested at North Second and Chestnut streets due to a traffic light that was knocked down.

· Jan. 17 at 4:11 p.m. a motor vehicle accident with injuries was reported at South Fifth Street and Schreiber Avenue. Fire Department personnel assisted EMS on the scene and cleared the roadway of debris.

· Jan. 22 at 6:02 a.m. an EMS assist was requested for an unconscious person at 31 S. Front St.

· Jan. 24 at 6:41 a.m. an EMS lift assist was requested at 11 N. Front St., Apt. A2.

· Jan. 26 at 6:04 p.m. a fire alarm was received at Columbia House, 1 S. Second St. due to cooking.

· Jan. 31 at 10:50 a.m. mutual aid was requested for a transformer fire behind Weis Market at S. Church and Columbia streets in Whitehall. Department personnel were advised to stand by at the station and were subsequently not needed at the scene.

Interim Fire Chief Matt Buskaritz reported at the Feb. 5 Coplay Borough Council workshop meeting that the all members of the department have been certified in basic fire police procedures through the state.

Three members of the department attended a four hour Hazardous Materials Awareness course.

Buskaritz and the assistant chiefs began a pre-occupancy fire inspection at the soon-to-open Coplay Convenience store located at 915 Chestnut St. in the former J&R building. Most of the objectives were met although there are a few areas that need to be addressed, Buskaritz said. The chiefs will revisit the location just before its opening date for a final inspection.

Annual SCBA pack testing was completed and all of the units passed inspection.

Hose, pumper and ladder testing will be conducted in early April.

The department placed an order for new turnout gear for all members. The order, placed in January and expected to be fulfilled in March, was purchased using unspent funds carried over from 2012.

The department joined a consortium with other area departments in order to take advantage of bulk pricing on new turnout gear that satisfies current standards. Coplay's order is for 10 complete sets of gear.
