LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Boys down Zephyrs to end regular season

Momentum is huge in basketball, especially heading into a postseason.

The Parkland boys basketball team is happy to be riding some momentum heading into the conference and district tournaments the next two weeks. After a disappointing 60-39 loss to Allen two days prior, the Trojans bounced back in a big way, holding off a pesky Whitehall team 56-43 last Saturday night at Whitehall.

The seedings for the LVC tournament was already set before tipoff, but you can't tell head coach Andy Stephens that the game did not mean anything.

"Our guys showed a lot of character tonight," Stephens said. "They responded to adversity from the other night. We wanted to play well, and they wanted to prove to themselves that they can do it and have something to go off of for next week."

The Parkland-Whitehall rivalry showed with the heated play and playoff-like atmosphere.

Jimmy Hahn (14 points) connected on three three-pointers over the course of the game, each one was of valuable importance to the Trojans (16-6, 11-3 LVC).

His first opened the game's scoring. The second opened up a seven-point lead in the second quarter, their biggest of the game to that point, and gave Parkland some breathing room from trading baskets with the Zephyrs. His third trifecta broke the game open in the fourth quarter, as the Trojans cruised from that point on.

"I didn't have a great game against Allen, and I really wanted to come out strong," said Hahn. "I came in thinking that I wanted to make things happen. When defenses pressure our other scorers and leave me open, I'm not hesitant to shoot if my teammates find me. It was nice to help the team out tonight."

Whitehall continuously remained close each time Tony Bellucci touched the ball. His game-high 19 points came off six three-pointers and a free throw. No other Zephyr scored more than six.

The key to the win was the Trojans having more than one high scorer. Three others, besides Hahn, had double digit scoring nights. Justin Zajko (14 points), Austin Beidelman (12), and Nick Rindock (10) helped to bring Parkland to a crucial win.

"We were one of the earliest teams to qualify for districts, so you might think that it was tough to find inspiration to play some of these games," said Hahn. "But for us, we always wanted to play for a good seeding, and we always wanted to play our best. We didn't want teams to think that they have us at a weak time, this is a big win the last game of the year."

Nate Case (four points) and Kevin Delourie (two) also found themselves on the scoresheet, and gave Parkland some big minutes against the physical inside players of Whitehall.

The Trojans will now set their sights on bigger things within the next two weeks.
