Regional compost authority sets dates

The First Regional Compost Authority, which Allen Township played a pivotal role in creating, will hold its monthly meetings at the Allen Township Municipal Building for 2013.

Meetings, held on the third Tuesday of each month at 9:30 a.m., are open to the public.

The current chairman for the authority is Richard K. Gable.

Among the authority's original members are Allen Township and East Allen Township. Northampton County also played a role in helping the authority become a reality.

The authority operates from a large tract at 6701 Weaversville Road in East Allen Township. The land was formerly part of a state-owned farm. The authority accepts tree limbs and other materials which are then turned into mulch, which municipalities later use for its public areas.

The authority has agreements with area municipalities, including the Borough of Northampton.

Grants played a big part in getting the authority up and running several years ago, including the acquisition of special equipment to move the large mounds of material and turn it into mulch.

The meeting dates for 2013 are Feb. 18, March 18, April 15, May 21, June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17.
