Heist adds name to 100-win club
Shaun Heist has had a memorable year so far, and there is so more to come.
The senior was a defensive force on the football team which won the Lehigh Valley Conference, District 11 and reached the PIAA quarterfinals. More recently, the dual-sport star won his 100th match on the wrestling match.
"It's a great accomplishment to get to 100 wins for sure," Heist said. "It's kind of cool thinking that I can look at my name on the banner with all of the other Parkland wrestlers that reached this accomplishment."
The senior said that he wants to go out with a bang, like how his football team did. There is time for him to do this.
Last weekend, Heist helped the Trojans take second at the District 11 team wrestling championship at Freedom High School, again falling just short of Easton for the title.
But that just keeps him motivated, as Heist is a competitor and hates losing.
Parkland opened the first round of team states with a commanding 38-18 victory over Wilson West Lawn on Monday.
Wrestling at the 220-pound weight class, Heist has had much success, but it's not because he studies his opponents or what his next move is going to be.
"I prepare for my matches by just not thinking," said Heist. "I don't think about who I'm wrestling or who is in my way. I just stay on a personal level and think about what I have to do to accomplish a win. I just go out and do the best I can do."
Heist joins a 100-win club featuring 16 members, and now currently includes four members of this year's team. Ian Evans, Ethan Lizak and Michael Marano all reached the milestone this year.
The future is wide open for Heist. He can go to college and play on the gridiron, or he can stay on the mats. Whichever he decides, he is sure to be successful.
"I've been getting letters and talking to coaches more for football than wrestling right now," said Heist. "That might just be because football just ended. I definitely want to play a sport because I can't stop doing both. I'm going to have to pick one of them, but right now I'm not sure which one. I think it's going to come down to how I like the school overall."
