On Jan. 30, Alburtis Borough Council discussed the possibility of taking over the Lockridge Church on the corner of Franklin and Church streets and the 17-acre bird sanctuary located between School Street and Fort Sumpter Road from Lehigh County. Council is waiting to see what Lehigh County has to say because the borough wants to be able to afford the repairs needed at the church before making a decision.
Mayor Kathleen Palmer is in favor of taking over the building because it is part of the history of Alburtis.
Faith Andrews, Kevin Shoemaker, president of Alburtis Lockridge Historical Society who meets at the church, and Scott Stoneback were in attendance about the church. Stoneback said he thought it would be foolish to give up on the church and maintained the family's Butz Foundation would contribute to the cost of the heating and water utilities.
The highway committee met about the Jan. 9 complaint of a vehicle with a boat attached parking across from Lori Loccarini's driveway on Lauren Drive making it difficult for her to exit her driveway. The committee reported when they investigated the area, the vehicle had been moved.
The police department was given permission by council to get their new speed-timing device.
Council is considering taking credit card payments from residents to pay their utility bills and discussed with Joanne Bealer of First Niagara Bank, Alburtis, what this would entail. Council will decide what they want to do at the next meeting.
Following adjournment, council immediately went into an executive session to discuss litigation.
The next meeting will be held 7 p.m. Feb. 27.
