Zephs prep for postseason
With one more match on the docket, the Zephyr wrestling team is poised to enter the postseason on a high note.
Winners of their last four of five matches, the Zephs will be looking to build on that success. They've been steadily improving with each meet, and that was evident when they tangled with William Allen High School last week. They dropped their Lehigh Valley Conference counterparts, 48-30 to get their league record to 4-3.
It was their fourth consecutive victory, and head coach Tim Cunningham said that they had to overcome a number of forfeits to post the win. That meant bonus points were needed, and the team delivered to ensure the win.
"We pinned a lot of kids," said Cunningham whose team registered eight falls against the Canaries. "The guys went out and did their jobs."
Helping the team by earning those pins were Nico Kauffman at 120 who decked Adam Mutz in 0:56. That was followed by 126 pound You Te Chen who pinned Fitzroyg Rivera in 1:54. Matt Schuler also registered a fall, flattening Luis Rosa in 2:35, while Robert Tully bladed Erik Rodriguez in 1:22.
The upper weights contributed as well, with 182 pound Fouad Haddad pinning John Almanzar in 1:01. He was joined by Tyler Bridgwood at 195 who decked Cameron Chappelle in 2:40.
Also becoming a member of the pin parade was Matt Bonshak who decked Zachary Brown in 0:50. Earlier that week, Bonshak joined some exclusive company, becoming a member of The Century Club at Whitehall High School. Cunningham said that list includes eight other wrestlers, making Bonshak one of the best wrestlers Whitehall has ever produced. The senior grappler's record now stands at 103 wins, and that number will increase as he looks to defend his district and regional crowns.
Cunningham said that it was a good team effort and they responded to the challenge.
Their win streak was interrupted by a loss to Parkland High School, falling to the Trojans 62-9 to even their record at 4-4.
Cunningham said the kids fought hard and were competitive throughout the entire match.
"I thought the guys showed a lot of character," said Cunningham. "They came in with the same positive attitude, relentless drive and aggressive spirit. They gave it everything they had an that's all you can ask for."
They knew the Trojans would be a formidable opponent, coming into the match at 10-2. He said they wrestled with the same intensity that was on display during their winning streak.
Earning decisions in that match were Kauffman, Bonshak and Haddad.
Cunningham said that they've been making steady progress, each wrestler working hard to achieve success.
"They're improving on a daily basis," he said. "They're doing what we ask them to do.
That improvement also includes preventing their opponents from getting bonus points as well as earning wins. Cunningham said they are fighting every time they get on the mat to avoid giving up those extra points.
As they prepare for their last match against Jim Thorpe Area High School, and the subsequent tournaments, Cunningham said they'll be looking to work on fundamentals and stressing areas designed to help each individual wrestler. That process involves watching tape, and then critiquing each bout, letting the wrestler know where they can make adjustments when they step on the mat again.
