LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Egg hunt, other events on agenda

The Borough of Northampton is looking beyond the cold winter weather to spring and its annual children's Easter egg hunt.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko informed council the event will be held at the community park off Laubach Avenue and Smith Lane 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23. The rain date is 1 p.m. Sunday, March 24. Easter Sunday is March 31.

In other business, council was informed some paperwork needs to be completed before borough lawmakers vote on the planning commission's recommendation to approve plans to convert the former Tama Manufacturing Building on Main Street into 13 apartments. The developers said the apartments would be upscale and have one or two bedrooms.

Councilman Robert McHale reported a joint training session for K-9 units held earlier in the area went very well. The event, which included Northampton, was held at the former vo-tech building on the Northampton Area School District campus. The structure is to be razed as part of the district's plans to construct a new middle school.

The police, McHale said, made four arrests in December, responded to 115 incidents, issued 29 traffic citations and four nontraffic citations and issued 14 parking tickets.

The Civil Service Board is preparing a list of three candidates who can be considered for full-time borough police officers when council chooses to make such an appointment.

The borough fire department also utilized the former vo-tech building for a training session. Fire Chief Robert Solderich said the training went well and had a high attendance by volunteer firefighters.

The borough-based Quota Club will sponsor its Quota Rock Feb. 23 at the Northampton Memorial Community Center. Proceeds go to the various programs the club sponsors.

Public Works Committee Chairman Councilman Keith Piescienski also reported a crew is constructing a concrete slab as the foundation for a new generator at the community center. The project is the result of a grant obtained from Northampton County.
