Feb. 7: Ghost in the House, high school auditorium, 7:30 p.m. Actor Ernie Hudson of Ghostbuster's movie fame stars in this one-man play about Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight boxing champion.

An elderly Johnson looks back on his life, specifically the impact of racism on his career.

The play is collaboration between Hudson and director Frank Megna. Proceeds will benefit the Parkland School District Education Foundation. For more information, call 610-434-6252.

Feb. 9: GEO Club Electronics Recycling Drive, high school, 9 a.m.-noon. GEO will collect anything with a plug up to the size of a TV. They are not collecting batteries or other items with toxic or regulated substances such as refrigerators with freon.

Mandy Weidenhammer M.Ed., Parkland High School Earth/Space Science teacher co-wrote an article with Dr. DeLeo from Lehigh University titled, "A Computer Story: Complexity From Simplicity, Understanding Electrical Circuits, Digital Systems, Truth Tables, and Base-n Number Systems," which was published in the October 2012 edition of The Science Teacher, a magazine published by the National Science Teachers Association.

The piece was worked on for several years before final submission by the teachers.

Parkland school bus drivers, led by Carol Williams, collected games, hats, scarves and gloves for 72 Parkland children who were identified as being in need by their elementary guidance counselors. The items helped make the past holidays a bit warmer for Parkland children who were lacking some essential winter items.

Christian Dzema, a Kratzer fifth grader, has led the building in collecting new, unwrapped toys for hospitalized children.

They partnered with Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley and more than 600 gifts were collected and distributed to the pediatric cancer units at LVH and CHOP.

Orefield Middle School music teacher Erich Joella has family in Staten Island who are keeping him updated on the tremendous amount of help needed to assist those recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

The staff at Orefield Middle School decided in lieu of holiday gift exchanges for this past Christmas, they would purchase gift cards to be donated to Hurrican Sandy survivors fromStaten Island.

The OMS staff also invited all members of the Parkland School District family to help.

Parkland High School teachers, led by teacher Lori Peters, collected gifts on wish lists for 78 children involved with Northampton County Children, Youth and Family Services.

The Key Club, PALS Club, staff, Class of 2014, and National English Honor Society were all major donors for this event.

Registration for new students who will be entering Parkland High School next fall will take place Feb. 25 and 26, 2013. A snow make-up date is scheduled for Feb. 28.

This evening registration is designated for those students currently residing in the Parkland School District but not attending Parkland schools, such as those attending parochial schools.
