Haddad helps Trojans to win
Nezar Haddad halted any momentum the Trojans were losing, and stopped the pressure from a surging Wilson West Lawn team. His 8-3 decision over Isaac Schannauer broke a three-bout losing streak, and led Parkland (8-2) to a 35-18 non-conference dual win over the Bulldogs (5-3) last Thursday night at Parkland.
Billy Hoh lost a close 4-3 decision, and Rahmeir Thompson and Marquis Sturdivant were both pinned to dwindle what was a 26-0 lead to 26-15 with four bouts remaining.
Haddad, a junior, showed why he's one of Parkland's better wrestlers as he battled to an 8-3 decision, and gave his team some breathing room again.
"I really focused on going out there and doing things that I could to get better and help the team out," said Haddad. "Coach Nunamaker has been working with me a lot. Anything I can learn on the mat will help me out down the road.
"I saw a high-crotch open up, and I went for it. I've been a little shaky on hitting those yet, but I went for it and just got to keep working at it."
Haddad has also been a team player. His brother, Omar, wrestles in the weight class right above Naze, and although he may want to relax after his bout, Naze is right at the mat again cheering and encouraging his brother.
"We both work together in the weight room and practice room," said Haddad. "We work really hard and just try to do our best out there. Everything you can do to help the team, really."
Omar Haddad was tied with Madison Woodward at 1-1 after two periods, but received two points on a quick takedown, and held on for a 3-2 decision at 195.
Shaun Heist made it three consecutive decisions at 225 when he won 10-4 against Hunter Hatlee for a team lead of 35-15.
The Trojans opened the meet with seven consecutive victories.
Five days after being pinned at Easton, Ethan Lizak, defending state champion at 113 pounds, picked up a major decision against Connor Moyer, 19-6.
Brayson Haas also added a major decision victory at 120. Parkland then picked up four straight decisions from Grady Millick (126), Ian Evans (132), Josh Ortman (138) and Mike Marano (145). Jacob Lizak picked up a forfeit win in the opening bout at 106.
The Trojans have bounced back in a big way from their disappointing three-point loss to Easton on January 12. The victories over Wilson West Lawn and Dieruff the night before give Parkland some needed momentum heading into the big Escape the Rock tournament held at Council Rock South.
"Anytime you suffer a loss like we did to Easton, it is tough to bounce back," said head coach Ryan Nunamaker. "I thought our kids were pretty resilient this week. Tonight we had a tough test because we knew Wilson West Lawn was strong. It was great for our individual matchups and for the kids to get ready for Escape the Rock. That will be a good test for our guys."
