Whitehall-Coplay School District Superintendent John Corby recognized school board members during the Jan. 14 school board meeting

"January is school board recognition month and although it's an unpaid position, Whitehall-Coplay School District has nine dedicated members," said Corby.

Corby described the duties members of the school board perform such as balancing budgets, working with funding and serving on other boards such as Lehigh Career & Technical Institute or Lehigh Carbon Community College.

"Look around at a concert, play or sporting event and you will see board members there," he said.

School Board President Eileen Abruzzi and Vice President Tina Koren presented board members Wayne Grim and Josef Fragnito with a certificate honoring their time served on the board. Grim is in his eighth year of service and Fragnito is in his 12th.

In other business, Joyce Wheeler was reappointed to represent the district on LCTI's Joint Operating Committee effective Jan. 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2015.

The board also approved the 2013-14 calendar. The new schedule will have students beginning the school year before Labor Day - on Aug. 26.

Corby also said graduation for the Class of 2013 is Thursday, June 13, at Stabler Arena.
