EAST PENN SCHOOL DISTRICT TIF meetings closed to public

Despite protracted deliberations amongst the board initiated by Lynn Donches, meetings of the tax increment financing committee will not be open to the public.

Meetings of the participating entities Lower Macungie Township, East Penn, and Lehigh County will, however, be publicly advertised with the opportunity for comment and a public hearing must be held by Lower Macungie Township with 30 days' notice. Donches moved the proposal in the interest of transparency and inclusion of the public.

The Goldberg Group, developers of the project, already indicated they would not want the meetings to be public. Charles Ballard pointed out it was neither legally required nor necessary under the Sunshine Act since public meetings would be provided at which the committee would make its recommendations to each participating governing entity for approval. All three bodies must agree on the committee's proposal for the TIF.

The recent flu outbreak has not hit EPSD with the same vehemence as other parts of the county. Dr. Thomas Mirabella, director of student services, reported to the board 130 cases in total for the district, plus four reported cases of adult staff.
