Wrestlers drop close meet with Rovers

When Jacob Lizak pinned Anthony Roche, all of the momentum was in the hands of Parkland.

The Trojans had taken the previous three bouts; two overtime decisions by Omar Haddad and Zach Maclean, and a 14-second pin by Shaun Heist to give Parkland a 24-11 lead after the Lizak's win.

But when Jacob's brother and defending state champion Ethan Lizak was pinned by Evan Fidelibus, the mood on the Parkland bench went from the highest of highs, to the lowest of lows in a matter of two minutes and 38 seconds.

"I thought our kids wrestled with a lot of heart and determination all night long," said head coach Ryan Nunamaker. "Obviously the upset at 113 was a huge momentum swing, but our kids continued to battle the rest of the dual meet."

Easton won the next three of four bouts and took the exciting LVC match 30-27 in front of a lively crowd last Saturday night at Shawnee Middle School in Easton.

Fittingly, this match of two of the top wrestling programs in the state came down to the final bout, tied at 27.

Ian Evans trailed 3-1 in the third stanza, but picked up two big points that sent it to another overtime. Kyle Baker won two points and the match with a 5-3 decision to keep Easton (9-0) undefeated on the year.

"It's just crazy," said Heist on the Easton-Parkland rivalry. "It doesn't matter what sport, but I think in wrestling this is our biggest match of the year. It doesn't get bigger than this."

Heist brought his Trojans back into the lead, after being down 11-9 with his pin on Kyler Wagner in a mere 14 seconds.

"I wrestled him a couple of times and it's been similar results," said Heist. "I don't really think about my matches much. I just try to go through the same routine before each one and stay focused."

Heist, who usually weighs in closer to heavyweight, wrestled at the 225 class. His senior classmate Maclean, wrestled at 285, which is above where he is normally. After nearly being pinned, Maclean scored two points on a reversal in overtime, and took a 3-2 tiebreaker decision.

"Honestly, it's all about the team, but the three points were huge for us in this kind of match," Maclean said. "It gave us momentum that we needed. I tried to move my feet as much as I can, and just use my quickness."

Parkland took the first two bouts at 145 and 152. Josh Ortman and Mike Marano won 3-2 and 4-3 decisions respectively.

After the Jacob Lizak pin, Parkland seemingly held all of the momentum with their top wrestler coming up.

But Fidelibus stepped up to the challenge, and shocked the Shawnee gymnasium with his pin of Ethan Lizak.

Jacob Montes won by a major decision, and Jim Saylor pinned Tom Yankanich to take the team lead back at 27-24 in favor of the Red Rovers.

Parkland knew its had to get points from Grady Millick in the second to last bout. And Millick delivered with a 7-5 overtime decision.

"I was really proud of the way our kids hung in the match and supported each other the entire evening," Nunamaker stated. "It was a great high school wrestling meet between two outstanding programs. We will continue to work and improve on our mistakes and hopefully we will be ready to make a run in the post season."
