Students make snowflakes for new Sandy Hook school

In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, communities around the country have been doing various activities and fundraisers to help the families affected.

At Parkland, students spent the week before winter break creating snowflakes for the students new school.

"Any kind of thing that people do will brighten their day and make them feel welcome.. It is just showing that people care," said sophomore Angela Qualil.

At the beginning of the week, teachers received information letting them know of the snowflake activity.

Snowflakes were to be made out of any form of paper and could be any color or design.

Some students created 3D snowflakes and others made more traditional snowflakes.

English teachers Elizabeth Smith and Andrea Roposh, along with the art classes and various other classrooms spent class periods throughout the week dedicated to cutting and decorating.

Both Smith and Kristin Meeker sent out multiple packages of snowflakes to a correspondent for the school.

"It is great being able to show our support and that even though we are a distance away, we still care and grieve for the people that are there," said sophomore Danielle Silfies.

The last set of snowflakes will be mailed out at the end of January.
