Girls top Emmaus, win streak at 11
The Parkland girls basketball team had little trouble at keeping their current winning streak alive on Tuesday night against one of their biggest rivals in Emmaus.
Behind an impressive outing on both ends of the court, the Trojans used a 60-24 defeat over the Hornets at Parkland High School to push their win streak to 11 games. Six of those contests have come in conference play.
"It's really nice the way the girls are playing," said head coach Wes Spence. "They compete every night and they come out prepared for every opponent. They're doing a nice job of executing the things we want them to execute."
"It's always been one of our big rivals," said Sierra Derti. "We definitely want to get out there, and always try and take it as hard as we can."
After leading by six points after the first quarter, the game was all but decided in the second quarter when the Trojans (12-1, 6-1 LVC) outscored the Hornets 16-3. In that second period, the Hornets (5-7, 2-5) were forced into four turnovers and held without a point until the 2:34 mark. Meanwhile, the Trojans had scored the first 13 points of the quarter.
"We were harping on defense a lot this year," said Derti. "If they can't score more points and we can put it in the basket then it's always looking good for us."
That lead was pushed to 38-12 at the 4:04 mark of the third quarter thanks to a number of Trojan fast break points resulting from Hornet turnovers. After a jumper by Derti on the first possession of the second half, Missy Oertner fed Hannah Gombos for a layup in transition to push the lead to 23.
Following a Hornet bucket, Gombos found Derti on a nice back-door cut for a layup that increased the lead to 25, and Gombos then got another layup in transition to make it 36-11. Emmaus was forced into eight third quarter turnovers and 26 for the game.
"The girls worked really hard [and] they've all bought into playing a fast style of basketball," said Spence. "It can, when we do it well, lead to transition points and easy baskets. That's going to help our shooting percentage as we move on."
A total of 15 girls saw playing time for the Trojans, and all but two recorded points in the win. With the starters sitting out for much of the fourth quarter and a good amount of the third, the reserves gained valuable court time in varsity play.
"The fact that we play together as a team, and still put up that many points and still go 10 deep is a big deal for us," said Derti.
"We really want to hold them all to the same standard and we want to continue to execute," said Spence. "We're trying to establish that that's what Parkland basketball is when we play - selfless basketball. We're a team working for the best shot."
Derti had a game-high 14 points to go along with eight rebounds and four steals. Gombos had 11 and Callie Krajcir added six points and five rebounds.
The Trojans will look to bring their winning streak to a dozen on Friday night with a matchup against Freedom. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at Freedom High School.
"We've had some games where the girls have faced adversity, which is a good thing," said Spence. "I know we're going to have more games like that as we move forward. Tonight we were fortunate enough to catch Emmaus on an off night and we got a good result out of it. But we're going to have games coming up in the next few weeks where our girls are going to be battle-tested."
