Girls defeat Dieruff

The Whitehall girls basketball team found the recipe for success and served Dieruff High School with a loss on Tuesday.

The 45-34 win over the Huskies ends their nine-game skid and gets them back in the win column with a chance to pad their record with a win over Bethlehem Catholic on Friday. It's also a chance for them to avenge an early season loss to the Golden Hawks, dropping their opening game, 48-31.

Their record currently stands at 3-11 (2-6, Lehigh Valley Conference) with seven games remaining on their schedule.

The win over the Huskies featured strong play from a host of Zephyrs, led by Taylor George who dropped in 12 points to pace the team. That total included two three-pointers, as once again the freshman found her stroke from the perimeter. Also having a solid floor game was Nicole Umbenhauer who ticked the cord for eight points as did teammate Karly Klein. Additionally, Madison Kelly poured in seven points, while Sarah Schannauer and Ivanna Jones each added three.

It's the second league win for the Zephs who are looking to make a strong bid for a successful second half to the 2012-3013 campaign.

In a non-conference game last Saturday, the Zephs were sunk by East Stroudsburg South High School, 53-30. The Cavaliers were led by Brittany Poje and Cy Lippold who combined for 30 points. That duo kept the pressure on the Zephs, staking them to a 28-11 lead at halftime.

The Zephs were led by Umbenhauer who had 12, while Kelly had five. They were followed by Brook Mellinger and Klein who each dropped in three points.

The Zephs now look to sustain that momentum as they embark on league games later this week.
