Eagle project postponed

A Moore Township youth who proposed an Eagle Scout project in the area of the former Northampton Borough Animal Shelter will have to await a decision from Northampton Borough Council.

Brad Fekula, 16, a Life Scout with Troop 62 of Berlinsville, made his second appearance before council on Thursday asking if the borough has granted approval for his project. It involves creating a dog park by constructing a kiosk, planting trees and perhaps adding a bench on the site, located near the borough's waste water treatment plant and behind the borough's fire station.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said council has not yet decided to move forward with the idea of constructing its own dog park. The decision could be made in the next several weeks, officials said.

"We'll keep you in the loop," Council President John Yurish told Fekula.

Zarayko said there are other sites that are close to the Hokendauqua Creek and on the other side of Lerchenmiller Drive that may be suitable for Fekula's Eagle Scout project.

Yurish and Zarayko advised Fekula that he would not have to appear at another council meeting. Rather he will receive a phone call from the borough advising him of council's decision. Council members said they did not want to throw cold water on the Scout's project.

Fekula's project is the final step required in being awarded the Eagle Scout pin, the highest rank for Boy Scouts.
