Camp Whitehall, the long-running summer day camp for school-age children run by Whitehall Township, will again be a major part of the township's summer program.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. recently debunked unconfirmed reports of the demise of the camp.

Hozza said Camp Whitehall is run from two sites, Cementon Park and Playground and the Fullerton Memorial Park. In 2012 the township eliminated the Schadt Avenue Playground as the third camp site.

Parents have given glowing reports on the camps their children attend, mentioning the high quality of the field trips, according to Hozza.

The camp is also open to children from outside the township. Students who attend Whitehall-Coplay schools have been attending Camp Whitehall for years. Children can be enrolled for short durations of time or the entire summer.

What may have fueled concerns by some people of Camp Whitehall's future was an earlier report that Camp Whitehall and the township's three public swimming pools were losing large sums of money. Camp Whitehall, it was said, was running a deficit in 2012 between $10,000 to $15,000.

On another note, with the holidays over, the indoor public swim held by the Whitehall Township Recreation Department is back. Open to only Whitehall and Coplay residents, the swim is held at the Whitehall High School pool.

Family swim takes place Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. and adult swim is from 8 to 9 p.m. The family swim program ends April 9 and the adult swim concludes May 6.

There is no swimming when schools are closed for a holiday, inclement weather or teacher in-service days. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and a photo ID is required to prove residency.
