Girls run win streak to eight
The Parkland girls basketball team entered Tuesday night's contest against Liberty without having suffered a loss in a little more than three weeks.
In large part to a number of seniors, the Trojans kept that winning streak alive with a 52-32 victory over Liberty at Parkland High School. The win was the Trojans' eighth consecutive overall and fourth in a row in conference play.
"It's really big because we came in knowing that if we were to not win our division because Nazareth is in it and it's a big contender for our division that they would be the other spot that would potentially be the wildcard," said guard Hannah Gombos. "So we really need to get this win to push us forward."
The Trojans last loss came in conference against Nazareth back on December 14.
"We just made an effort to try to get better every night, and try to do what we do and do it as well as we can." said head coach Wes Spence. "That's a tribute to the kids. We have a senior group who got together and said hey we want to be the best team we can be [and] we know we're better than we were that night. And they've just dedicated themselves to try and be the best team they can be."
With the Trojans up 10 roughly midway through the fourth quarter, it was Gombos who made her mark on the game in the most crucial moments. From that point on, Gombos went on to score 10 straight Trojan points in the final quarter, ballooning their lead to 16 with moments to play. She had 10 of the Trojans' 18 fourth quarter points, and finished with 16 points.
"We started out pretty slow in the beginning," said Gombos. "But as we started picking it up it became easier for us to get looks and score."
After a sluggish start to the game in which the Trojans (9-1, 4-1 LVC) committed six first quarter turnovers and trailed 12-9 after one, Parkland responded in the second quarter on both ends of the court. The Trojans held the Hurricanes (7-3, 3-2) to just six second quarter points, and led 23-18 going into halftime.
That lead reached double digits in the third quarter, and remained much of the same for the final eight minutes.
"I'm happy with the total number they had, but there were some baskets that I definitely think we need to execute better." said Spence. "We gave them some open layups because we didn't rotate defensively off penetration. So there are obviously things you want to clean up."
Forward Sierra Derti who matched Gombos' team-high in points with 16 was vital for the Trojans, particularly in the first half. She put in nine of the Trojans' 23 first half points, and added five more crucial points in the third to separate the Trojans.
"We knew in the beginning we were rushing [and] we were excited because we knew it was going to be a good game," said Gombos. "We just slowed down, ran our plays, and when we got the open shots we took them."
Gombos added four assists and six rebounds, while Derti grabbed seven rebounds in the win. Missy Oertner tallied six points and Callie Krajcir tallied five and nine rebounds.
The Trojans will travel to Dieruff on Friday and Pocono Mountain West on Saturday looking to extend their streak.
