Boys light up scoreboard, Liberty
Astin Jones had a night he will never forget.
Parkland's senior swingman found himself leading his team to one of its biggest wins of the season.
Jones confidently knocked down three straight first quarter three-pointers, and led four players in double figures in a 90-78 Trojan win over Liberty in a high-scoring shootout at Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The 168 total points are the most scored in a game during head coach Andy Stephens' five years at the school. Parkland's 90 points are the most for the team since a 90-55 win over Dieruff on February 7, 2006.
"I don't know if I've ever coached a game like that," Stephens said. "But it was fun."
It sure was fun for the players and fans that are into fast-paced, high-octane offenses. It was more of an all-star game atmosphere than one which featured the top two teams in the Lehigh Valley Conference.
Parkland (9-1 overall, 5-0 LVC), which hasn't lost since the nonleague season opener to Freedom, made 11 of 16 shots in the first quarter, and took an early 28-18 lead. The Trojans had 46 points at halftime after scoring a total of 43 in the win over Easton last Friday night.
There were a total of nine players from both teams that reached double figures in scoring. The Trojans four horseman were Jones (16), Austin Beidelman and Nick Rindock with 21 each, and high-scorer Justin Zajko (25).
"I think we were just ready to play this game," Zajko said. "We came out and made our shots. Coach Stephens told us that we had to make our shots to compete. We were very pumped for this game. It's been talked about since the beginning of the season."
Zajko led the team in points, but Jones's effort on both sides of the ball may have been the difference in this one.
He knocked down a three-point shot in the second quarter, his fourth of the night, that gave the Trojans a 46-39 lead. He also had a steal to end a Liberty possession after the Hurricanes closed a 72-55 deficit to 80-72, and had a chance to get within five with just over two minutes remaining. His efforts on the glass also led to more possession or points for Parkland.
"I know their focus was going to be on Beidelman and Zajko because they're great players," Jones said. "I started hitting open shots, and once I got going, I felt the confidence and they just went in."
The Trojans iced the game from the free throw line in the fourth. They shot 14-for-19 from the stripe over the final eight minutes.
Rindock also proved hard to contain offensively. After Beidelman was forced to play cautiously with four fouls in the second half, Rindock took over in his place, netting 15 of his 21 points in the third and fourth quarters.
Pat Donnelly led the way for the Hurricanes with 20 points, and four three-pointers.
Jimmy Hahn contributed five points and six assists in the win.
Parkland next plays host to Dieruff on Friday night.
