Northampton Auto Parts, a fixture on Main Street since the 1960s, is closing its doors.
Located at 1416 Main St., the store will remain open until Jan. 31.
Store personnel confirmed the closing first reported by Northampton Borough Manager Gene Zarayko to council at a December meeting. Zarayko said he has no further information on the future use of the building.
Store management said the economy is the chief culprit leading to its closing. There were no reports of a going-out-of-businesss sale planned for this month.
Brad Heckman, the owner, will continue operating Northeast Auto Parts, his auto parts store in New Tripoli. A spokesman said the Northampton region and customers will be serviced at the New Tripoli location.
The Northampton store was closed for a few months in 2008 when the present ownership took the reins of the business.
There was some good news regarding businesses in the borough. Pappy's Pizza, which has been closed for months at 24th and Main streets, will reopen in 2013 under new ownership. Zarayko said the only information his office has at this time is that it will again serve as a pizza restaurant.
The name of the new owner has not yet been disclosed.
There could be further developments on Main Street this year, both involving residential housing.
