Catasauqua High School student dies in car accident

A Catasauqua High School student was pronounced dead Saturday, Dec. 29, at the intersection of Race and Railroad streets.

Jaenis Delossantos, 18 and a senior at CHS, was a passenger in a vehicle operated by Thomas R. Bono, according to a news release issued by Chief Douglas Kish of the Catasauqua Police Department.

The vehicle, Kish reported, was traveling west on Race Street when Bono lost control of the automobile and struck a utility pole at 6:15 a.m. at the 100 block of Race Street.

Delossantos, of 453 Bath Ave., was pronounced dead at 6:50 a.m. at the scene by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Craig Hanzl.

The Catasauqua Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Catasauqua Fire Department, Catasauqua Fire Police, Northampton Regional EMS, PSP Bethlehem and the coroner's office.

The coroner's office has ruled the cause of death to be blunt force trauma due to a motor vehicle accident. The manner of death has been ruled an accident, according to the coroner's office.

Bono, 18, of 1024 North 19th Street, Allentown, was also pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner's office.

Passengers Aaron Machado, 21, and Paige Esterly, 17, both of Allentown, were transported to St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem, Kish's report said.

According to the obituary released by the Brubaker Funeral Home, Delossantos played volleyball and was employed at Traffic Shoe Store at the Lehigh Valley Mall.

She is survived by her parents Juan and Denise (Gonzalez) Pena, brothers and a sister..

Bono, the son of the late Thomas Lee Bono II, is survived by his mother Elizabeth Ann Hagerty-Bono, a brother and sisters.

The Catasauqua Police Department and the coroner's office are currently investigating the incident.

Catasauqua Area School District officials could not be reached at press time for a comment on the district's response to the death of a student.
