STUDENT OF THE WEEK Katherine Thomas
Q: What grade are you in?
A: I am a senior at Emmaus High School.
Q: What is your favorite subject? Why?
A: My favorite subject has to be humanities. It's a double course that includes history, philosophy, literature, music and art. I like it because it's different. There is no set curriculum, which gives the teachers more flexibility. Also, it's a pretty high-caliber group of kids, so we have a lot of interesting discussions.
Q: Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A: I'm senior class president and I have three varsity soccer letters but my favorite award has to be the first place Gold Key I won for my painting of a toilet in 10th grade.
Q: Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
A: I spend most of my time on the soccer field. I love to babysit and any free time I have is usually spent on reading, painting, hiking and anything active really. I love being outdoors.
Q: What is your next goal after high school?
A: I'm going to choose a college I love and earn a degree in a field that will hopefully take me places. I'd like to somehow incorporate my desire to travel and help people.
Q: What would you say your biggest challenge has been so far?
A: Trying to not sweat the small stuff. As a high school kid every little thing feels like the end of the world. I 've had to work on not making everything a big deal. I'm learning everything is basically small stuff so there's no use letting it get to you.
Q: What do you want to be remembered for?
A: I'd like to be known as that person you can go to for anything.
Q: Who is in your family?
A: My parents Jeff and Lisa. I've got an older brother, John, and a sophomore sister, Emily. I used to have a goldfish named Gandalf.
Q: Do you have someone you look up to?
A: The first people that come to mind are my grandparents. Their marriage inspires me. They were high school sweethearts and have been married for 51 years now. By today's standards that's pretty darn good. I also envy their simple lifestyle. My grandfather has something of a sense of humor and gets the biggest kick out of the littlest things. It's great. And my grandma has spiked blonde hair, how cool is that? They make the best fried peanut butter banana sandwiches.
Q: Do you have any advice for your peers?
A: Procrastination is my worst enemy, so I'd say just make sure you get the important things done first, then you can goof off.
