Robertson honored as Gatorade Player of Year

Parkland senior volleyball star Kelly Robertson was selected as the 2012-13 Gatorade Pennsylvania Volleyball Player of the Year last week after leading the team to a second place finish in the state.

Robertson, the 2011-12 Parkland Press Female Athlete of the Year, is the first played from Parkland to win the honor.

In a season which many thought the Trojan volleyball team would take a step back from 2011, when the team won the school's first state title in girls volleyball, Robertson made sure they stayed in the spotlight.

The Penn State recruit crossed the 1,000-kill mark for her career and finished as the school's all-time leader in that statistic with 1,275 total kills.

Perhaps her most memorable game came in the state semifinals where she delivered a performance for the ages against Upper Merion with 38 kills on 54 attempts to lead the Trojans to their second straight state championship game.

Robertson's numbers her senior season were the highest of her career. She ended the year with 548 kills on 858 attempts for a kill percentage of 63.9 percent. She had nearly 100 more kills than her junior season, when she finished with 449.

The six-foot middle also went over the 90-block mark for the second straight season, finishing with 93 total blocks. She had 252 blocks in her four-year career.

Robertson was a two-time All-State selection and was named the MVP of the Lehigh Valley Conference.

In the classroom, she's also put up strong numbers, maintaining a 3.49 GPA, while also volunteering at youth sports camps and a food bank.

Past Gatorade award-winners include USA Volleyball players Kim Glass (2001-02; Pennsylvania), Kim Willoughby (1998-99, 1999-2000; Louisiana) and Ogonna Nnamani (1999-00; Illinois).
