Frozen Trojans come back to tie Emmaus
Ryan Dumbach's second goal of the night was scored in dramatic fashion.
With traffic in front of the net, Dumbach scored the game-tying goal with 36 seconds left on the clock to salvage a 6-6 tie for the Parkland ice hockey team against Emmaus Monday night at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.
"It was a playoff type atmosphere," said head coach Gerry Chandik. "It was crazy out there. I think that kind of got to them a little bit because they wanted to do a little more than they needed to."
The tie may not have been the ideal ending to this rivalry game, but the Trojans will surely take it the way it started.
The Green Hornets found the back of the net three times in the first period, and held a commanding three-goal lead after one.
But Parkland (9-0-1) fought back. Evan Dratch scored passed Michael Smoker, and then assisted on the next two Trojan goals. Dratch slipped a pass through the defense that found the stick of Benjamin Zager, who hit a one-time effort into the net. Dratch later ripped a shot on net that was saved, but right into the path of Dumbach, and the Trojans only trailed 4-3 after two.
"When we were down 3-0, I said to just make passes and don't do everything on your own," said Chandik. "Finally we started making passes and we started getting goals. Every team goes through a slump, and today was our slump."
Parkland found itself in another deep hole at the start of the third period. Drew Phillipes and Ben Farabaugh each tallied a goal to give the Green Hornets another6-3 lead with 9:36 remaining.
Nicolas Chandik and Colin Pratt both put one away, and the Trojans pulled Robert Stock (nine saves) with under a minute to go to add an extra attacker. Dumbach made sure the comeback effort didn't go to waste when he snuck one by Smoker for the tie.
"It was a great effort coming back," said Chandik. "We almost won it in the end too with some close shots. We came back, we didn't give up. This team is never going to give up. We have a lot of offense. It was just tough to be down so much and we had to open the flood gates. You also don't want to give up six goals. We've only given up 11 all year in nine games."
