Contemporary salon celebrates 10th anniversary

Tucked into a storefront in Northampton's historical district is a hair salon that feels like a chic Manhattan shoppe posing under a marquee touting Style ID.

"Our concept is to provide a unique style for each of our customers," said Janet Romanyshyn, the salon's owner and chief stylist. "Our prices are competitive and we provide a great experience."

The salon caters to professional women and men.

"I adjusted our hours so that we are open until 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday," said Romanyshyn. "Professional women have so much to do on the weekends that the days when women were able to spend a Saturday getting their hair done are gone."

The salon offers Saturday hours until 3 p.m. and on Friday they are open until 6 p.m.

On Dec. 8, the salon celebrated its 10th anniversary at 1508 Main St. Romanyshyn had pictures of the two storefront locations when she took the business. Her husband and father-in-law morphed the tawdry walls and cramped bathroom into the contemporary-styled salon. Romanyshyn custom-designed each of the work stations and continues to keep pace with changes in the business. She recently added a chair for pedicures.

The Brazilian blowout technique is one of the latest treatments available at Style ID.

"The technique is for women with coarse, overly curly, or unruly hair," said Romanyshyn. "The difference is amazing. After the technique, your hair is so much more manageable and feels softer."

The salon also sells products it uses.

"We specialize in superior products like Redken. I added Sukesha with 100 percent organic nutrients that my customers like," Romanyshyn said. All the products that the stylists use are available for purchase at discounted prices.

"If someone comes in with a picture of a style they like, we will let them know if it works for them," she said. "I like to keep our customers modern and with current styles no matter what age they are."

Romanyshyn has more than 30 years experience as a stylist, having spent her earliest years in Burlington, Vt., and then in Chestnut Hill, a Boston suburb, before coming to the Lehigh Valley. Some of her clients have been with her from the beginning.

"I come here because I get good service," said customer Karen Kirst. Janet listens to my needs and does excellent work."

Although Style ID concentrates on hair, it offers a full range of services to include nails, pedicures and waxing.

"We like appointments, but we will take walk-ins. We also have men and children in our clientele," said Romanyshyn.
