Swimmers sweep opener
The Parkland boys and girls swimming and diving team had an easy go of their first meet of the season, defeating Souderton. The boys won by a score of 114-72, and the girls were 111-75 winners.
The girls are led by senior Megan Polaha. Polaha, along with Katherine Kapelsohn, Erika Freeman and Erin Jordan won the opening event, the 200 medley relay. Freeman and Polaha also took the 400 free relay, partnered with Siena Salvaggio and Shannon Bonner.
Polaha was also a winner in two individual events, the 100 fly and the 100 breastroke.
"We're using this first meet as a stepping stone, to see how we are progressing since last year," said Polaha on the new season. "We've been doing well at practice and it is good to finally show that when it counts."
Polaha looks to bring her team back to the pinnacle of District 11 swimming this year. A good test from District 1 Souderton, proved to show that the Lady Trojans are ready to defend their title.
A couple of weeks ago, head coach Rob Robitaille believed that the boys would also be led by his seniors. But it was a sophomore that grabbed some attention.
Rhett Karopoulos was a winner in the 100 fly, and as a part of team winners in the 200 medley relay (Karopoulos, Colin Orlowski, Harris Nagle, and Christian Schlegel), and 400 free relay (Karopoulos, Christopher Strauss, Orlowski, and Adam Sicinski).
"I think we're doing well, and stepping up to the challenge," Karopoulos said on competing in a tough LVC. "I think we're ready to step up to the challenge."
Nagle is another key returnee for the Trojans. Nagle edged out fellow teammate Alex Bukoski by less than a second in the 100 breastroke.
Strauss, another senior, came in first in the 200 free and 500 free individually.
