LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Present and future Swim team has an interesting mix

This season, Whitehall head swimming coach Pete Rile will be experience a part of the present, and he will also have a good look at the future.

No, the veteran coach hasn't abandoned his pool-side manor for a fortune teller's role, but he does have a roster that can resemble the aspects of one. Rile began the 2012-13 season with nine seniors and 11 freshmen from his girls' squad of 25 swimmers.

"It's an interesting mix," said Rile, who recently began his 24th season with the Zephyrs program. "We will have both extremes this season. We'll have our share of leadership and also inexperience as well.

"But it should prove to be an interesting season."

With a diverse outlook in mind, Rile didn't quite know what to expect when his team opened the season at a recent invitational meet. But, in the end, Rile was quite pleased. His girls' squad finished second to Blue Mountain.

"We didn't know what to expect and we just wanted to see what we had," admitted Rile. "But we were pleasantly surprised with everything. Our veteran swimmers looked good and our younger swimmers made some strides.

"We were pleased with our opening progress and it should lead to some more things down the road for us."

Rile will look to senior Brooke Gilson and sophomore Mina Feyrer to set the pace. Both were state qualifiers last season Gilson will look to improve in the distance and free style events, while Feyrer will look to return to form and above in the butterfly.

Other seniors who should make an impact this season are Allison Emick (200, 500), Vickie Caesar (butterfly, freestyle, sprints), Sarah Wagner (distance), Emily Birch (distance), Lizzie Beller (sprints), Rachel Cuti (sprints), Jocelyn Penaranda, (backstroke), and Abby Nemeth (backstroke).

Rile also expects his underclassmen unit to also make some ripples as he noted how seven of his incoming freshmen has success in the Whitehall Waves program.

On the boys' side, Rile is also optimistic as he will field a team of 11 males, a higher number in recent years when the Zephyrs had trouble fielding enough boys to score.

Seniors Tyson Dziedic and Rudy Romanyshyn and juniors Jonathan Boyd and Takwan Hargrove will help lead the way for the remaining seven underclassmen in the program.

"We have some boys with experience, but we will also have a number of true newcomers," said Rile. "However, it is a plus for us to have this many boys in the program. We have also heard a buzz that we may be getting some more boys, and our middle school program will have more boys in their program.

"So, our future on the boys' side will be promising."

The Zephyrs opened the regular meet season this Monday at East Stroudsburg South before their first home meet against Liberty Thursday.

"We'll have a different look this year," offered Rile. "But it will be one that can benefit us for a while. I like the looks of our freshmen and that gives us a strong future ahead."
