IRT caboose still undergoing upgrades

The Ironton Rail-Trail Oversight Commission reported at its recent meeting IRT restored the caboose, now located in West Coplay, Whitehall Township, continues to undergo upgrades.

Arrangements are being made by the commission for the transport of boxcar wheels from the Whitehall Parkway to the Biery Yard, in the back of the historical sign compound fence. This will be the second set for placement near the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor sign at the Saylor Cement kilns in Coplay.

Bob Abbott, member of the IRT Oversight Commission, reported the new Hokendauqua-North Catasauqua Bridge scheduled to be built will include a tunnel, 100 foot long by 12 feet high, allowing for unimpeded access along the IRT.

Joseph Bundra, longtime activist with the IRT Oversight Commission, reported Mark Heberling of Boy Scout Troop 79, Stiles, will enhance the Shafnisky and Trolley Bridge Memorial with landscaping and trolley tracks for his Eagle Scout project.

A volunteer refurbishing a rail combine work-car in the Whitehall Parkway, an extensive project expected to take months or more to complete, has had 12 sections of scaffolding stolen. The commission is asking anyone with information on the stolen scaffolding to contact police.

Several volunteers who installed a restored kiosk and landscaping at the Jesse Reed memorial site at the IRT trail, near the Hokendauqua American Legion, were given a hearty thank you by the commission.

The 10K Run and Walk the IRT Oversight Commission holds annually netted the commission $1,500 toward its operating expenses. The check was presented to the IRT Oversight Commission by Chris Schmidt, owner of The Finish Line Running Store in Emmaus.
