John Sulyma, 90, of Whitehall, died Nov. 22, 2012, at Fellowship Terrace. He was the husband of the late Mary (Pater) Maurer Sulyma, and former spouses, the late Nova Jean Sulyma and the late Irene Sulyma.

Born in Lincoln, R.I., he was the son of the late Elias and Julia (Mostava) Sulyma.

He was in the U.S. Navy where he served as a quartermaster first class and was a veteran of World War II.

He retired from the SUNY Alfred print shop in 1992. He was a high school industrial arts teacher in the New York area. He designed theater sets for the San Jose Light Opera, the Hornell Area Arts Council and several schools in Allentown.

In the Hornell, N.Y., area, he organized and spearheaded the Fourth of July celebration committee, formulated a schedule for the H.A.T. buses and was a member of the city's planning board.

He worked on the Apollo 11 flight project. He was a mechanical engineer and held two patents.

In New York, he was a member of the vestry committee at Christ Church. He attended Redeemer Lutheran Church, Allentown.

He was a volunteer firefighter in West Babylon, N.Y.

He is survived by a son, Jonathan Mark and his wife Patricia Lupo of Almond, N.Y.; two daughters, Stephanie I. of Rochester, N.Y., and Lynn A. of Bowie, Md.; a stepson, Marshall E. and his wife Judith Maurer of Allentown; a stepdaughter, Judy R. and her husband Vincent Yeakel of Lower Macungie Township.; and two grandchildren, Marisa and Nicholas Mauro.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Dimitri and Stephen; and a twin sister.
