It's Christmas at the station
Angels have occupied the Siegfried Railroad Station in Northampton.
The angels are part of the Northampton Area Historical Society's Christmas at the Station. The event is expected to draw large numbers of visitors Saturday and Sunday to the Siegfried Railroad Station on 21st Street.
The theme for the 2012 Christmas display is angels and snowmen, and representatives of each are seemingly everywhere at the station – in glass showcases, suspended from the ceiling, on top of pedestals and appearing to greet the visitors as they enter the station, located near the Tri Boro Sportsmen Club.
In 2011, station, home of the borough based historical society, featured decorated Christmas trees, an antique train, Nativity scenes and a number of Santa Claus figures.
Harold Smith, Northampton Area Historical Society president, said the currrent display of angels and snowmen is breathtaking. Many of the angels and snowmen are collectibles or antiques on loan to the station by the owners.
The angels come in all sizes and colors. Smith pointed out some angels are made of porcelain, stained glass, plastic, crochet, fabric, paper and one is even made from sea shells.
One angel from the Betty Seidel collection, Smith pointed out, is at least 75-years-old. Another angel capturing the attention of visitors was donated by historical society officer and longtime member Caroline Yastryab.
"The angel's face is truly that of an angel," said one admirer.
The display includes an angel made by a boy in school on a paper plate. There is also a stamp collection featuring angels and one made from wrapping paper.
As for the snowmen, some are attired with a hat, cap, scarves and boots and are of various sizes.
Before leaving, visitors can purchase an array of homemade cookies, from cutouts to cookies filled with apricot, lekvar and other fruit fillings.
