Parkland looks to break PCL jinx

For the past three seasons, the quarterfinal round of the PIAA Class 4A tournament has been where District 11 champions have gone to die.

Each of those years, it's been at the hands of Philadelphia Catholic League powerhouse LaSalle College.

For three straight seasons, the Explorers have vanquished the District 11 champ in that round, beating Easton in 2009 and 2010 and Nazareth last year.

Parkland's win over Delaware Valley last week in the final of the District 2-4-11 subregional means that once again a District 11 team will get a shot at LaSalle in the state quarters.

Saturday, the Trojans (11-2) will travel to Northeast Philadelphia to take on the District 12 champions. The Explorers were 37-20 victors over Frankford two weeks ago. Parkland will be dealing with a perennial Pennsylvania powerhouse, who has had two weeks to prepare.

The Trojans will see a similar attack this week as they saw last week at Del Val. The Explorers are a predominantly passing team. Quarterback Chris Kane has thrown for 2092 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Jimmy Herron, the backup quarterback, is also the leading rusher on the team with 420 yards on 81 attempts. Herron also is also second on the team in receiving with 32 catches for 573 yards. Sean Coleman leads the team with 789 yards on 58 catches.

It is like night and day with these two offenses.

Parkland will rely on the legs of Tim Baranek, Jarel Elder, and Eli Redmond. Elder scored three touchdowns last weekend, and Baranek and Redmond added one rushing touchdown each for the Trojans.

It is bound to be another high scoring game. Parkland put up 49 points last week, and have averaged 42 points through three games this postseason.

Once again the Trojans defense will be expected to step up. Redmond's interception for a touchdown last week gave Parkland a two score lead. Matt Costello also made a big play on special teams. These are the two key factors for Parkland. LaSalle will score, it's a matter of making a stop when needed most to gain some confidence and momentum.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Northeast High School in Philadelphia this Saturday.
