The Borough of Northampton will hold its annual yule tree lighting ceremony, which traditionally attracts large crowds despite the cold, crisp weather, Sunday, Nov. 25.
The borough yearly receives a large donated evergreen tree from a family who finds the tree too large for the family. This season the borough's list of possible donors is higher than in the past, due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy.
While the borough ponders who will donate the town's Christmas tree, it may well be an evergreen tree which was toppled by the recent hurricane.
The tree lighting ceremony will take place at the concrete island at Main Street and Laubach Avenue, near Miller's Diner on the east side of Main and Bob's Flower Shop and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building on the west. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. The rain date is Monday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m.
Borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported there will be entertainment during the program and the singing of carols and holiday songs.
With contacts already made to the North Pole, borough officials said Santa will make his first visit to the town to greet children at the tree lighting program. Santa will arrive via the borough's ladder fire engine, greeting each child and giving each boy and girl a bag of goodies.
The honor of officially lighting the community's yule tree will go to the family which donated the evergreen tree.
The lighted yule decorations will be on street poles before the ceremony, it was said.
