A benefit bake sale and Chinese auction recently took place in the bus drivers' lounge of the Parkland School District.

Drivers Ruth Piper, Carol Williams and Stephanie Fernandes organized the fundraiser for Lia Sampson, 6, the granddaughter of driver Susan Jones.

Teachers, food service personnel, custodians, school bus drivers and others provided overwhelming support to the family of this little girl who had a stroke in June.

She has undergone four brain surgeries and spent much time in Lehigh Valley Hospital and Good Shepherd Rehabilitation.

The youngster needed to relearn how to eat, talk, sit and walk.

After her stroke and subsequent surgeries, all of her motor functions regressed.

The family is in the process of making adaptations for their daughter.

She needs a special bed, one that is closer to the floor and bathroom facilities must be adapted to her abilities.

Lia continues to make progress.

Through the efforts of the bus drivers, other employees and area businesses, Lia's grandmother was presented with more than $2,500.
