Pleasant Valley up next for District 11 title
The Parkland football team took care of some business with a 41-10 win over Easton, the last team to beat the Trojans, last Saturday night in the opening round of the District 11/2/4 Subregional tournament.
"I think it meant a lot to our whole program," said head coach Jim Morgans. "Not only our varsity program, but our JVs who lost by one point to them this year, and our freshmen team who lost by a touchdown to them. They have been the team to beat over the last few years. It meant a lot to beat them. It gives us a lot of confidence."
Parkland (9-2) continues it's tear on the opposition, with a current nine-game winning streak. The Trojans will now host the seventh seeded Pleasant Valley Bears (8-3) this Friday night. It is a match up of the last remaining District 11 football teams in the 4A classification, meaning the winner will be crowned district champ.
"Playing the only other team in the District 11 at this point in the season is great," said Morgans. "It's awesome for us [and] I'm sure it's awesome for them. You win this, you're the District 11 champion."
The Trojans won in a hostile environment last Saturday and stuck with a similar game plan that has fueled their recent surge.
A little dose of Jarel Elder and Eli Redmond offensively, and the front seven on defense flying to the ball and gang tackling.
The defense didn't allow a point in the second half, and kept the Easton running backs from gaining big yardage.
They will need to do more of the same this weekend, as the Bears bring a balanced offensive attack.
Freshmen tailback Austyn Borre has rushed for 1,245 yards through 11 games this season, and has scored 17 touchdowns overall, including a kickoff return.
Junior quarterback Brandon Leap has thrown for 2045 yards and 22 touchdowns. His favorite target, Andrew Romeo, has been on the receiving end of 12 scores, including a 53-yard touchdown last week to open the scoring in a 24-21 win over Stroudsburg.
Much like Parkland, Stroudsburg entered last week's game on a nine-game winning before being knocked off by the Bears, who are coached by former record-setting East Stroudsburg University quarterback and Harlon Hill winner Jim Terwilliger. Pleasant Valley's three losses this season have come to Nazareth in the opening week, Stroudsburg in Week 10 in the de facto Mountain Valley Conference title game and a strong Wyomissing team.
"We're just going to have to continue what we've been doing," said Morgans. "I think we're getting better every week. We're playing at a high level, and we've been playing some real good football teams. Timmy Moncman, our defensive coordinator, has been working his tail off getting our kids to understand what the other teams are trying to get done.
"They have a great freshman running back and a good wide receiver. I'm sure they're going to want to get isolation on our corners, who aren't the tallest guys in the world. We're going to have to get some pressure on their quarterback. They line up in an I-formation and just muscle their way down the football field, and they also run a spread offense and throw the heck out of the ball. They're also very big up front. It's going to be up to us to decide what looks we give them."
Offensively for Parkland, the running game has been the focal point.
But senior quarterback Tim Baranek had a solid game last weekend throwing the ball. A 32-yard touchdown to Jarey Elder was called back.
Elder and Andrew Fuehrer have been consistent targets for Baranek.
A win will move Parkland further into the subregional against the winner of Delaware Valley and Scranton. Trojans will look to take that step after losing in this round last season to Nazareth. Parkland may also want get another crack at Del Val, which opened the season with a late comeback win over the Trojans.
