Ice hockey gets first win
The team may not consist of players from the same school, but there is no lack of chemistry on the ice this winter hockey season thus far.
Head coach Rich Crowly has athletes from Salisbury and Whitehall, but couldn't be happier with the camaraderie of this unit. Three consecutive goals, and superb play out of Tristen Collins in net led Whitehall/Salisbury to its first victory of the young season.
"It's coming together now," Crowly said. "We had a slow start, going 0-2-2. Tonight was our first league win. We're going to be alright. A little offensive skill set issue. We're definitely a strong defensive team."
The Pleasant Valley/Quakertown team got on the scoreboard first with a one-time slap shot off the stick of Joey Hoover.
That was the last time PV/Quakertown would taste a goal with Collins (Salisbury) holding fort. He stopped 31 of 32 shots on goal.
"He's a solid player," noted Crowly. "Every stop we need him to make he seems to make it. There were some spectacular ones [tonight]. We sort of expect that of him."
Collins has been with the Whitehall team for a couple of years, so Crowly has the utmost confidence in his net minder.
Ian Carey, another Salisbury product, tied the game by sneaking a shot under the legs of Devon Supper with six minutes left in the first period.
Matt Emerick (Whitehall)notched the game winner with a little over a minute to go in the second period. Emerick finished with a goal and an assist.
Whitehall/Salisbury staved off relentless pressure with a man down in the second period. Pleasant Valley/Quakertown fired 15 shots on net that period, and had about a five minute period straight in their offensive zone.
Brad Owens iced the game in the third when he ripped a shot past Supper. His goal came just after Collins was helped out by his best friend, the post, a couple seconds earlier.
Crowly has enjoyed the season thus far with his different mix of schools.
"It's been great," he added. "Most of these kids have been around about five, six years."
Their next game is slated for next Monday night at the Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem against another Non Pure divisional team, Central Catholic/Bethlehem Catholic at 7:45.
