Frozen Trojans trounce Emmaus, stay perfect
The Emmaus-Parkland rivalry hit the ice on Monday night, and like any other sport, it didn't disappoint. The students came out in support, and the play on the ice was physical and fast paced.
Parkland (5-0) found the net five times in a 5-1 win at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena in Whitehall.
The loss was the first for Emmaus (4-1) on the young season.
The Trojans were relentless in their attack, forcing 45 saves from Green Hornets goalie Mike Smoker on 50 shots on goal.
Morgan Bensinger's second goal in the first half came just 48 seconds after Drew Phillipes tied the game for Emmaus. That goal proved pivotal, and took any kind of momentum away from the Green Hornets.
"We scored first and then they tied it," Bensinger said. "We had the puck in their zone quite a while. I just got a good rebound and put it home."
The game didn't disappoint from an excitement standpoint. There were a couple skirmishes, and the first penalty of the game came just 0:33 in, on elbowing by a Trojans forward.
"It's probably going to be the most physical game of the year," noted Bensinger. "It's a good game against a good rival, and it's going to get physical, we knew that. We expected to have to come out and play hard."
Smoker continued his solid play, and kept Emmaus in the game, making save after save.
Brett McHale's first of his two goals came with a little over a minute left before the end of the second period, and seemingly put the game away.
The Green Hornets struggled putting more pressure on Robert Stock (17 saves on 18 shots), who came through nearly every time his name was called.
James Swartz just added icing to the cake with a rifle up into the top right netting.
Benjamin Zager and Evan Dratch tallied two assists, and Nicolas Chandik, Jake Hulsizer and Colin Pratt contributed with an assist each for the Trojans, who remained unbeaten.
"We just want to keep winning and stay undefeated," said Bensinger on the upcoming weeks. "We also want to get the top spot in the Flyers Cup coming up."
The Trojans will next hit the ice next Monday night against Easton at 8 p.m.
