Shrouded in early morning fog, a solemn ceremony observing Veterans Day was held Sunday in Cementon and Egypt.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7293, Egypt, joined by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4714, Northampton, paid tribute to the men and women who served our country and sacrificed their lives, past and present, in peacetime or at war, along with those missing in action.

The program honored those who served in all branches of the U.S. Military – Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard – from World War II and Korea to Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Standing at attention, the former servicemen and servicewomen wore uniforms and caps signifying their military service and VFW alliance.

Egypt VFW Commander Dennis Makovsky led the programs which began at the war memorial in Cementon, followed by a ceremony at the Egypt VFW and the Navy jet fighter memorial before concluding at the triangle in Egypt.

At each site, the program began with the national anthem followed by a volley of shots fired by the rifle and honor guard squads of both organizations and ending with the playing of "Amazing Grace."

There were small groups of people in attendance at each site.

Whitehall Mayor Edward D. Hozza reminded those in attendance "to be mindful" of the new veterans, men and women who have and are serving in places such as Afghanistan.

"We should welcome them home, not only with celebrations, but with our support," he said.
