LOWER MACUNGIE MIDDLE SCHOOL Students perform 'Heroes in my Head' Nov. 15, 16, 17
Lower Macungie Middle School Theatre takes the stage with a first time ever performance of "Heroes in my Head." Performances will be held at the Lower Macungie Middle School 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15, 16 and 17 with tickets available at the door for general seating.
The comedy written originally by J.S. Oliver has been a unique experience for LMMS Theatre Director Patrick Campbell not only because it has never been performed anywhere in the world but also because of the creative license to edit the storyline as the director chose. Changes could be made to enhance the story or make it more relative.
With a cast and crew of about 36 students with some double casting, the storyline follows a shy comic book artist, Mikey, who is given 48 hours to create a new superhero. As Mikey brainstorms, the audience gets to watch his zany, quirky and at times eccentric characters come to life on stage. Add into that mix an overbearing boss, rent demanding landlord, his needy mother, a dopey competitor, an office romance and stress escalates causing the lines between reality and imagination to blur for Mikey. The community is invited to come out and see if Mikey finds his new superhero in time and the good message the story portrays.
Eighth grader Emily Yen handles props, art and backdrop on the set. She was given the opportunity to create the logo design painted on the set backdrop. She found it challenging painting such a large canvas. What she likes about being a part of this play is "you know you helped put this together; without back stage there's no show."
Yen enjoys being a part of "this family," getting to know the cast better and the comical challenge in this particular play.
"You get a sense of what the character is going through. If I can relate to it (storyline), I'm sure everybody can. Even little kids worry about getting homework in on time or finishing a project. It's interesting watching all of the things running through his (Mikey's) head," Yen said. She hopes the audience enjoys the show, feeling like they're actually in the office building as the scene unfolds.
Robert Lynn plays Mikey, one of the head comic writers and main character in the play. Lynn said he can relate to the storyline personally in that Mikey gets bossed around and he gets bossed around by his brother.
Lynn likes playing this character who he describes as more mellow than other characters he played in other productions. He described this unique experience by saying "It's sorta fun to edit; there will be some parts that don't make sense and we can change that to fit the character."
Lynn said he likes being able to change the script to make it more realistic and easier to relate to in today's times.
Marie, the comic company's secretary is being played by Julia Bezems.
"I like this one (play) because we're the first company to perform the show. We got to edit the script as we went and make corrections to fit our needs better. I really liked that to fit a middle school stage," Bezems said.
Bezems describes her character as a kind of a sleuth, perceptive and independent. She said she likes playing this kind of character and how Marie solves the mystery of the office manager and one of the comic book authors scheming to take the company's money and go with a competitor.
Bezems feels the message of the show is as character Mikey says in the play, "I think we all have a super hero inside of us."
