Gombos' goal give Trojans gold

With gold around their necks and the District 11 3A girls championship in their possession, it was a well-known pop song playing in their post-game celebration that summed up Parkland's season Chris Brown's "Don't Wake Me Up."

In the midst of a 1-1 game in overtime of Saturday's district title game against Whitehall, Trojan senior Hannah Gombos scored the game-winning goal with 3:44 to play in the extra session, lifting Parkland to a 2-1 victory and advancing it into the state tournament.

The win which was their second District 11 title in three seasons comes just weeks after the Trojans defeated that very same Zephyr team in the LVC championship game. Certainly, the Trojans are on a roll that may seem like a dream in the making. Just don't wake them up just yet.

"I think for a program it validates everything that we keep doing where we push academics first, charity work second and playing soccer third," said head coach Al Haddad. "If we can continue to do well I think that validates that we put soccer third and yet we can still do well.

"Getting both league and districts this year is just absolutely remarkable."

Gombos got behind the Zephyr defense and as the goalkeeper steadily came out to position herself for a save, she knew she would have a chance on goal. The positioning was on point, and Gombos tallied her team-leading 23rd goal during one of the season's biggest moments.

"We kept our pressure on for defense," said Gombos. "And then luckily somebody got the ball through and it ended up slipping into me, and then I just had a quick shot at the goal."

The Trojans got on the scoreboard first with an early first half goal by senior Camille Roberts. Senior Jess Wetherhold sent a cross in front of the net, and Roberts rose over the Zephyr defenders while perfectly directing a header into the back of the net with 6:02 played in the game.

The league's MVP, Kayla Cunningham, wouldn't let the Trojans hold their 1-0 for long though. With 7:00 minutes to play in the first half, Cunningham created some space and fired a shot with her left foot toward goal, bouncing off the right post and past Trojan goalkeeper Becky Webster.

Webster and the Trojan defense would remain solid throughout the game. While the Zephyrs had their chances in both the second half and overtime, Webster was there to save a few more Cunningham shots on goal in the extra session.

"Our whole philosophy about [Cunningham] is make her take those long range shots even though those are the ones that she puts in sometimes," said Haddad. "Because if she's going to get a close look it's going to be in the back of the net. We've got to make sure that if she's going to get her chances, lets make them from 25 [or] 30 yards out."

In recalling last year's District championship, it was Whitehall that defeated the Trojans in overtime to capture the crown. A year later, the Trojans had some extra motivation in avenging that loss and believed their time was now.

"We knew since they took it from us in overtime last year here we really wanted to come out and beat them," said Gombos. "That was our goal throughout practices and the whole season to come out and win it.

"That overtime feeling last year when they beat us was awful. So it was definitely motivation to come out and win."
