Girls fall in first round of states
There's one thing Parkland girls soccer head coach Al Haddad doesn't question about his team - its resilience.
Despite allowing two goals in a span of 5:27 early in the first half and falling behind 3-0 in the first 40 minutes of play, the Trojans continued battling to the end of Tuesday's 4-2 defeat to District One's Neshaminy in the PIAA Class 3A girls soccer tournament.
"They're never going to quit," said Haddad. "I got a remarkable group of young ladies. You don't win the league and then the district championship by giving up and not playing hard, especially when you have a Whitehall in your bracket."
Neshaminy's Megan Schafer lifted the Redskins to an early lead that the Trojans were never able to fully recover from.
Schafer first found Fran Donato in front of the Parkland goal for the Redskins' first goal at the half's 31:47 mark. Just minutes later, Schafer's cross in front of the Trojans' net was collected by Erin Farrell, whose shot was lifted past Parkland goalkeeper Becky Webster.
"We just lost marks," said Haddad. "The difference between Neshaminy and other teams is you lose a mark against other teams they don't have the talented players possibly to hurt you. We lost marks and anybody buried the ball. You just can't lose a mark like that."
Schafer connected on a goal herself with just over 10 minutes to play until halftime, but the Trojans were not ready to give up just yet.
With just under two minutes to play in the first half, senior Hannah Gombos found senior Jill O'Connell as she made a move behind the Redskins' last line of defense. O'Connell took a few dribbles and fired a shot that pulled the Trojans to within two goals.
Neshaminy's offense responded though just a little over a minute later with 12 seconds to play in the first half, bringing its lead back to three goals heading into half.
"When we scored to make it 3-1 I was saying to everybody on the bench - now we've got a game, because the next one is ours," said Haddad. "It's really deflating to have that one to go in, but again we fought back from it."
Senior Camille Roberts' goal in the opening minutes of the second half got the Trojans to within two goals. And while the Trojans' play improved after halftime, combined with goalkeeper Shannon Kriz saving every Redskin shot in her vicinity after replacing Webster after halftime, Neshaminy's lead was too much to overcome.
Kriz had six saves in the second half while in goal.
"Our goal at halftime was to win the second half," said Haddad. "Go represent the district better than what we did in the first half."
