Girls fall in district finals

The scene of Saturday's District 11 3A girls soccer championship game was one Whitehall was all too familiar with.

Like last spring season's district title game in which the Zephyrs defeated Parkland 2-1 in overtime, the two teams would square off once again just months later. This game too went into overtime, but the outcome was a tad bit different.

Parkland's Hannah Gombos broke a 1-1 tie as overtime was winding down with a goal that lifted the No. 1 seeded Trojans over the No. 3 seeded Zephyrs to a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

It was Gombos who got behind the Zephyr defense with just under four minutes remaining in overtime when goalkeeper Kelsey Himmelwright was left with a choice.

But as she started to come out of goal to position herself for a save, Gombos' shot was lifted into the back of the net.

"I think these are the type of games any school or any team likes to play," said Whitehall head coach George Romano. "You don't play to lose, but these are the games you really like to play."

The Zephyrs - who were looking to avenge a 3-2 loss in the LVC championship game to the Trojans back on October 18 - had a number of chances in the extra session, particularly Kayla Cunningham. The Zephyrs, however, failed to close the page and Parkland responded.

"We had quite a few shots - a lot," said Romano. "But what are you going to do - that's the nature of the game."

Like the LVC title game, Parkland scored in the opening minutes on Saturday as well. Camille Roberts connected on a header which was set up by a Jess Wetherhold lob just 6:02 into the game that put the Trojans ahead.

The Zephyrs responded though before halftime to tie the game at a goal apiece. Cunningham made a move from about 18' out to create some space, then fired a shot with her left foot that hit the post and ended up in the back of the net with 7:00 remaining in the half.

Both teams had chances in the second half, but none more threatening than a Whitehall shot that somehow trickled under Becky Webster's legs. The shot was just a few feet wide right though.

"We have accomplished a lot," said Romano. "We came here with a young team. We have six seniors who played their butt off, but we did well."
