An upgrade to the Coplay Parkway Pavilion and other related projects are likely to take place in 2013.

Coplay Community Days, the annual late summer festival that takes place at the 11.5-acre Coplay Parkway at the town's north end, may be funding projects at the site, specifically improvements to the pavilion.

Meeting at the parkway pavilion and grounds Thursday afternoon to begin the process of deciding what improvements to make were Steve Burker, Coplay Community Days president; John Schreiner, Coplay Committee Days vice president; Jerry Deutsch, American Club of Coplay president; Coplay Borough Council President Lou Bodish; and Dan Pavelko, borough public works department supervisor.

Following a successful four-day festival in late August, Burker said the committee wants to invest in the parkway, particularly the pavilion, because the structure is an important part of the event.

Pavelko was asked to come up with a plan for proposed electrical upgrades at the pavilion in order to ensure adequate and safe electricity for future Community Days events, including the bands. Pavelko said the required upgrade may not be as extensive as some initially believed.

The group discussed the possibility of removing a couple of trees near the swimming pool bath house to further increase the present lighting available at the site.

Another two or three light standards may be erected to eliminate a dark area near the pool and the walkway leading to the parking lot on the north side of the parkway. Deutsch said the American Club may be able to provide the poles.

The pavilion originally was a project of the former Koplay Keystone Kops and was dedicated in May 1975. The Kopettes supplied the custom-made picnic tables that are still in use.

The stage for bands and entertainment will be reconstructed so that it is higher and larger, allowing the public a better view.

The shrubbery outside the west end of the pavilion could possibly be reshaped to provide additional seating. In addition, restroom upgrades are a possibility.

Since Coplay Community Days was formed in the 1970s, it has funded the community tot lot, as well as fencing projects for Coplay Sports and the Coplay American Legion baseball facilities.
