Tennis bows out of states
Even with a new head coach, it was business as usual for the Parkland girls tennis team.
The Trojans once again found themselves in the first round of the PIAA tournament after winning another district team title, this year dropping East Stroudsburg South 3-2 for the crown.
But like last year when the Trojans fell to Hempfield 3-2, the Trojans' (18-1) ran into another hot team. Harriton - who entered its first season at the 3A level after previously dominating play in 2A - showed that a change in class couldn't do much to alter their play.
From District 1, Harriton's top three singles players all secured victories in defeating the Trojans 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon at West End Racquetball Club.
"They traditionally have some excellent teams down there," said first year head coach George Grim. "This team [Harriton] even lost the District final so tennis is very good down there."
Jenna Peng (6-1, 6-2), TuQuyen Pham (6-0, 6-0) and Colleen Wylie (6-1, 6-2) fell in singles play to three Harrinton players that are members of the USTA. Still, they battled until the final point was won.
"Their top two players are USTA players that have a lot of tournament experience," said Grim. "I think the third one does also. We knew we were in for a real struggle against a team like that."
Peng and Pham aren't done yet, however. The duo will travel to Hershey to compete in states for a doubles championship.
"That's exciting for them," said Grim. "Jenna was close to getting there in the past and she was close to winning the district singles championship. That'll be a great experience for both of them."
The two doubles matches did not finish. But Rachel Wong and Lauren Knafo won their first set, and were poised to capture a Trojan victory.
"I think they would've won their match if they had been able to continue," said Grim. "They were playing well. And it shows the depth of our team. Their top players are very good. With our doubles this year, we were very strong throughout the doubles and it was hard for me to pick who's the top doubles team because at any point our lower doubles teams could beat the upper doubles teams."
A large nucleus of the team will be back next year for the Trojans who will look to build on this season's success.
"Until the district final we weren't really challenged by anybody," said Grim. "I can't be upset about how we did. It was very satisfying to win against East Stroudsburg South - that was a close match. Jenna came through there to win it for us at the end. And it looks good for next year because we have all three singles players coming back."
