Boys fall to Green Hornets in LVC title tilt
There was only one thing missing from Parkland capping off a near perfect LVC campaign a league championship.
Heading into last week's LVC boys soccer title game against Emmaus at J. Birney Crum Stadium, the Trojans had an undefeated mark, possessed one of the conference's stingiest defenses, and were at one point ranked No. 1 in the Pennsylvania State Coaches Association rankings. A conference championship would be the icing on the cake.
But apparently the Hornets wouldn't let any of that affect them. Two goals from Ben Roda, including the game-winner in double-overtime, ended Parkland's hope of capturing its third league title in the past four seasons with a 2-1 victory.
Belal Mohamed appeared to give the Trojans the game-winning goal in the final minute of the first overtime, but it was called off by the referee.
"It's going to be a little more difficult to swallow with a pulled ball out of the back of the net," said head coach Patrick Birns. "I'm not sure why that was called out of the back of the net, but that makes it a little more difficult. They said our player ran into the keeper."
Despite tallying 17 shots on goal for the game, the Trojans remained scoreless for 74 minutes until finally getting one.
Down 1-0 after Roda's first goal early in the second half, Nick Hutchinson lined up for a corner with roughly six minutes to play looking to tie the contest. His cross toward the goal snuck past Emmaus keeper Kevin Fine, and the momentum suddenly shifted the Trojans' way.
"I think we showed a lot of composure coming back," said Birns. "We made some adjustments, got the tying goal, and then just thoroughly dominated the overtimes."
But after a first overtime session in which the Trojans held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal and were just a few feet off target, the Hornets got a break in the second overtime.
Fine's goal kick was redirected by Adam Kita past the Trojan defense, and Roda was left one-on-one with goalkeeper Jacob Gottwald. Roda just had to choose where to place it.
"Their keeper's got a big foot," said Birns. "All they're doing is playing long ball and chasing it down.
"What's crazy about the game is one bad mistake and they end up winning."
The Trojans will be the No. 4 seed in the District 11 3A tournament. The team hosted No. 13 seed Whitehall on Wednesday, and the winner of that match will play the winner of No. 5 Pleasant Valley/ No. 12 Easton on either Friday or Saturday.
When asked about preparation for districts, Birns' answer was short and to-the-point.
"We got a little work to do," said Birns.
