Peng, Pham capture doubles crown
The friendship between Jenna Peng and TuQuyen Pham goes back a long time.
The junior duo met when they were "really little" through their fathers, who were colleagues at Air Products.
Little did they know that they'd one day reunite as teammates on the Parkland tennis team. The pairing has been a fruitful one for the Trojans the last three seasons and the friendship was brought to the forefront on Monday, when Peng and Pham won a District 11 singles title at West End Racquet Club, defeating Bangor's Ashley Jones and Jess Wain 6-1, 6-2 for the crown.
It was redemption for the duo, which lost 6-4, 6-4 in last year's district final to Brittney and Kaitlyn Poje of East Stroudsburg South.
"I really wanted her to go to states for singles because I knew she definitely deserved it," said Pham of her teammate. "But I was really happy that she was my partner in this."
Peng was equally happy to have a teammate on her side of the net this week. A week after losing to Brittney Poje in last Monday's singles final, her third career loss in a district final, Peng played freer and more focused tennis. Her ground strokes were hitting lines and when she approached the net, she put the ball away with authority.
It was Peng that eventually finished off the Slater duo on the fifth match point try, slamming home a shot at the net for the win in deuce.
"There was so much less pressure in this," Peng said. "It's so much easier when you're playing with someone else who you can count on. In singles, its just you and everything depends on you.
"Not a lot of people have the chance to come back with a really good shot at making it to states, so I was really lucky to have that."
While the two friends attended different middle schools, Pham going to Springhouse and Peng to Orefield, their reunion at the high school level has produced plenty of positive results for the tennis team. They are the team's two top singles players in the regular season and combined to go 29-1 this year for the 15-0 Trojans.
This week, they'll lead Parkland as the top seed in the District 11 team tournament. The defending champion Trojans played their first match Tuesday against Southern Lehigh, winning 4-1.
They'll return to their singles spots this week, but be back as partners for the PIAA Class 3A double tournament, which begins Friday, November 2 at the Hershey Racquet Club. As District 11 champs, the duo will face the runners up from District 3, yet to be determined.
Peng and Pham become the first Parkland duo to win the doubles title since Liana Mandel and Megan Wylie pulled it off in 2008. No District 11 doubles team has won a match at states since 2002, when Freedom sisters Amanda and Jessie Granson reached the semifinals and finished third.
But that doesn't mean you can count out the latest champions. They surrendered just 10 games in their five matches, with Northampton's pair of Darby and Madison McCall coming the closest to winning a set, falling 6-0, 6-4.
"We crammed a lot [of doubles] in this week," Peng said. "Every single match, even in districts, is a practice for us and that's how we were able to play how we did in the final."
