Girls need overtime to squeak past Rovers

In the midst of a 2-2 game in overtime of Tuesday night's Lehigh Valley Conference girls soccer semifinals against Easton, a number of Parkland seniors were looking to make a play.

A little more than halfway into the extra session, Jess Wetherhold received a ball in Red Rover territory. And with Jill O'Connell coming up on her left side giving the Trojans an advantage on goal, Wetherhold found her open teammate.

All O'Connell had to do was pick her place in the net and fire. And that's what she did while advancing the Trojans into the conference finals on Thursday night with their 3-2 victory over the Red Rovers at Whitehall Zephyrs Sports Complex.

"Usually Jess tends to, when she gets the ball in the flank, pass it in the middle," said O'Connell. "And I knew I needed to make a run to show for her because whenever she gets it she looks to pass other than shoot. So I tried to get in the best possible position I could to score a goal."

"We work on that every day at practice so I beat the defender line, looked back, saw Jill, placed it right to her and she got it in," added Wetherhold.

The Trojans (16-2-2) went ahead 2-1 in the second half when a Wetherhold corner kick was directed in goal by senior Camille Roberts with 33:03 to play. It was Wetherhold's second assist of the game and team-high 11th of the season.

But the Red Rovers (11-6) responded just over 11 minutes later. Jillian Morello fired a shot toward that right side of the goal that found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2 with 21:34 to play.

That score remained for the rest of regulation and for 8:25 of overtime until O'Connell connected on the game-winner.

"This is the second game in a row we put ourselves in a hole," said Haddad. "It's neat to see that your team has the character to be able to yield that adversity and come back twice. We weren't happy with how we played today at all. This was probably one of our least attractive games we've played in a long time. So hopefully we got it out of our system before Thursday."

The Red Rovers struck first nearly 10 minutes into the game. Jordan Luciano's pass found Savannah Fehnel in front of the net, and her goal with 30:04 to play in the opening half gave the Red Rovers an early lead.

Senior Hannah Gombos responded for the Trojans however just minutes before halftime. After getting taken down in the box, Gombos' penalty shot found the back of the net for her team-high 22nd goal of the season and tied the game at 1-1.

The Trojans will face Whitehall (16-1-1) in the finals on Thursday night looking to repeat as conference champs. But Whitehall is responsible for the Trojans' only conference loss this season, while the two squads finished in a 2-2 tie in their second meeting just a week ago.

"We go into our season with expectations of competing and putting ourselves in a position for this," said Haddad. "If it works out for us then great."

"We know that playing Whitehall it's going to be a big game," said Wetherhold. "We have to clean a lot of stuff up, and we're hoping to get a good win to propel us into districts."
