'Cinderella' to enchant at JCC
Stagemakers at the J will be bringing the world of glass slippers, pumpkin carriages and "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" to the Lehigh Valley with its production of "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella Enchanted Edition," Oct. 25, 27, 28, Nov. 3, 4.
Stagemakers at the J is a children's theater troupe which was started in fall 2010 by the Jewish Community Center of Allentown, 702 N. 22nd St., Allentown.
Stagemakers Director Syd Stauffer says there was not too much offered for children in the theater arts at the JCC prior to Stagemakers. The program began with the idea that "… doing a play would be a great thing. It just spiraled from there," says Stauffer.
With two years of theater camp and its sixth full-length production under its belt, Stagemakers has been busy with seven weeks full of 21 rehearsals with a cast of 23 children to bring the enchantment to life for the community.
"The kids are very excited about the princess story," Stauffer says about what continues to draw interest to the classic Cinderella tale.
"The fairy godmother is much sassier," says the director about the "Enchanted Edition," with its more modern approach through language and humor.
The cast includes Ashleigh Albert as the Fairy Godmother and Nick Grotta as The Prince, both of whom attend school in the Parkland School District.
Rebecca Knappenberger is music director.
"The kids are working very hard. They have a lot to learn, and I can't wait to see the finished product," expresses choreographer Cheryl Moritz about her first time working with Stagemakers. "It's exciting to see [the] steps come to life with a full cast."
"The kids are great. I have a lot of the same kids come back every time," says Stauffer, "It's a very good group."
The Stagemakers show is appropriate for audiences age 5 through adulthood.
