Trojan athletic memorial dedication set for Oct. 14

Parkland's Trojan Alumni Varsity Club welcomes the public to a dedication ceremony at the recently completed brick and granite memorial, "A Salute to Athletes – Past, Present, Future."

Situated on the grass between the entrance and exit doors of the high school gymnasium, the structure consists of a curved bench with a granite Trojan head at its center.

The bench is surrounded by a flat surface of bricks engraved with names, sports, graduation years and other phrases submitted by sponsors.

The program and unveiling of the Trojan head will take place 1 p.m. Oct. 14 at the memorial.

Master of Ceremonies will be Elmer Heiney. Alumni Varsity Club president Ron Bealer will offer remarks.

Additional participants will be Athletic Director Jeff Geisel, high school Principal James Moniz, Superintendent Richard Sniscak, state Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, and Pastor Dennis Moore, of Union Lutheran Church.

Musicians from the high school band and chorale will perform.

While 200 bricks have already been sponsored, many more are available for engraving.

Founded in 1951, the Trojan Alumni Varsity Club offers support to athletes and sports in Parkland School District.

In the beginning, a person had to have a varsity letter from a Parkland team to join the club.

Now, it is open to anyone, including non-athletes and people outside the area.

Through the years, the club has given nearly $100,000 in scholarships to Parkland athletes.

The late David Davis conceived the memorial as a way to bring more recognition to the Alumni Varsity Club and to athletes of the school district.
