Hess scrambles to Regionals

Being able to salvage a good score on a day that isn't so good is what separates the average golfers from the great ones.

Chad Hess didn't do everything right at Monday's District 11 Championship Tournament, held at the Shawnee Golf Resort. But the Parkland junior managed to take third place in Class AAA, shooting a two-over par 110 over 27 holes.

"It was a scrambling day," said Hess. "When I didn't hit the fairways and greens I needed to pull through and hit the shots that I needed to hit.

"Whenever I hit a bad drive, the second shot was always top notch. If I hit a bad second shot, I got up and down a lot. I made a lot of good two putts from long range. The putts were falling."

Hess is the only Parkland golfer to make it though districts. Trojan teammates Mike Perkins and Adam Sutovich also played Monday. Perkins shot 123 (39-41-43), missing the cut by eight shots. Sutovich carded a 126 (45-41-40).

Parkland's Rebecca Davis and Alyssa Coronati played in the girls tournament. Davis shot 159 (52-52-55), while Coronati carded a 161 (54-54-53).

Hess makes it to the individual regional tournament for the first time in his three years on the team. He will compete in a 50-player field at regionals next week, held at Tuesday at Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood where the top 24 players will move on to states.

"I'm taking it one step at a time," said Hess. "My goal from qualifying was to get to districts. My goal from districts is to get to regionals. I'm just trying to think about one step at a time."

Hess made six birdies, 14 pars, six bogeys and one double bogey in Monday's round.

Bethlehem Catholic's Nick Maff won this year's Class AAA title, shooting a district record four-under par 104 (34-34-36).

The freshman made eight birdies and three bogeys while hitting 20 of 27 greens in reglation and getting up and down for par four times. He three-putted just once to tie the tournament record set by Emmaus' Steve Bourbon in 1990. Bourbon's record came in a 36-hole tournament.

"I just played solid golf," said Maff. "I hit a lot of greens. I was pretty much just hitting greens and two putting for par."

Maff won the Class AAA tournament by a comfortable margin. He finished three strokes better than Evan Notaro of Northampton, the 2010 district champ.

Freedom's Helen Hsu won the girls Class AAA tournament, shooting 126.

In Class AA, Wilson's Collin Hagenbuch won the boys title. He shot even par over 27 holes then beat Northwestern's Cole Miller, the 2011 district champ, on the fourth hole of a playoff.

Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado won the girls Class AA Tournament.
